Have you been at that point? You know, that point where everything sucks. Nothing seems to be working and all you want to do is throw in the towel? When you start to feel like you’re failing and nothing you plan or hope for ever works. When things don’t go your way, honestly it sucks! Adversity. That feeling like you’re never going to go out of the trenches.
It’s easy to talk about Oprah Winfrey, Kobe Bryant, and other successful people around the world. But there’s something common amongst them. Self– Motivation. Yes, that internal process that makes one move towards a goal.
Staying motivated is a life challenge of its own because, life can sometimes throw one off balance. With its many ups and downs and negativity filtering in, you may begin to loose hope and dreams.
Did you know Oprah was fired from her reporting job because they told her “she wasn’t fit for television?” Guess who owns her OWN TV network and is one of the richest black women in the world? Oprah!
Did You know when Kobe Bryant went to his first basketball camp, he didn’t score a single point? Guess who’s a basketball legend today? Kobe!.
Did you also know Walt Disney was fired for lack of “imagination“? Guess who owns the renowned Walt Disney INC. You guessed right!
Life can seem pretty tough sometimes and in those moments, what do you do? Raise your hands in the air and surrender? Build momentum and push forward? Choosing to stay motivated is the best choice because it offers renewed hope and ignites those internal sparks in you. If there’s life, for sure there’s hope! So how does one stay motivated in those trying times?
Here are 5 tips to stay motivated when life weighs you down;
1 Believe in yourself:
The major reason why most people loose hope in life and become unmotivated is because they have lost confidence in themselves. They don’t believe it’s possible to achieve that goal or be that person they want to be. And that they can do whatever it is they really want to do. It is important to believe in yourself. Have confidence that it can be done. Trust the process. Even in those times when everything seems so dark, be confident that it will be light again. Trust that things would work themselves out. Visualize your future and believe that you can achieve it. Kobe didn’t score a point but he persevered. Because he believed. That’s the first thing. Confidence matters!

2 Surround yourself with positivity:
No matter how hard you try to prevent it, staying around pessimistic people will rub off on you. It’s difficult to stay positive when people around you are always negative. If your friends don’t have that drive or ambition, you won’t! Surround yourself with people who share same life views as you. So that you can encourage each other and motivate yourselves.

And when those discouraging thoughts spring up, look for something inspiring to knock them off. By reading a book, taking sometime out to exercise or getting involved in any fun activity. Whatever to keep your heart towards positivity, embrace it! And if someone close to you is always being negative, don’t throw them away. Find a way to help them and as you do, you’re equally helping yourself. Know that “this too, shall pass“!. Focus more on your blessings instead of your issues.

3 Break your goals down into smaller pieces and start small:
When your goal is too large and life seems not to give you that means to achieve it at that time you want, you may likely begin to loose hope and become demotivated. Sometimes ambiguity creates fear which in turn causes one to give up.
But you can break down your goals and start small. They’ll all add up. If you make a plan and break down the big intimidating challenges into smaller components, you make your goal easily achievable. As you achieve each small component, you’ll gain motivation to do more. The feeling of success is a wonderful motivator so start small, and as you accomplish the small goals, appreciate/reward yourself. Before you know it, you’ll be half-way through your goals!
4 Take care of yourself:
Don’t neglect yourself because you’re feeling down. Help yourself feel good by taking care of yourself both physically and mentally. Health is wealth remember? We tend to over-eat or under-eat when we feel down. Eat balanced meals, get enough sleep, (atleast 7/8 hours per day), take proper rests. If you stay healthy, you can be more efficient but if you don’t, you may face more problems as it may be difficult for you to concentrate or perform optimally.

5 Get support:
You may not be able to do it alone. Perhaps you need some support. (Don’t we all?). Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you so need! Support from close ones (friends and family) may go a long way to help you get back on your feet and confront life. So when you feel demotivated, get some support. You can also join support groups both on/offline to help you stabilize and achieve your goals.
“It doesn’t matter what’s been written in your story so far. It’s how you fill up the rest of the pages that counts”.
Sometimes, even the most determined people get overwhelmed. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Staying motivated gives you more courage and helps you stay strong instead of burning out yourself.
