Personal growth is an unending journey, where one keeps transforming, changing, and evolving into a better version of him/herself, by adopting new habits, setting goals, and so forth! The thing here is, you start from a place of realization. The point where you realize that you need to step up. Perhaps it could be learning new skills, changing some bad habits, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone, or seeking ways to stay happy.
At some point in your life, you’re going to realize that in you, lies a huge potential. Potential to become whatever you want your life to be. This is going to ignite your desire to want to experience something different. In doing so, you’re going to challenge yourself to try things differently, take timely actions, set new goals, etc.
“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living” ~ Gail Sheehy
It isn’t easy, but it’s something we all desire. To live our best lives, reach our potentials, be happy, and feel some form of fulfillment. (Call it success).
We as humans are not perfect. We all have areas in life where we need some improvements. Luckily, there’s always room for improvement in all aspects of human life. It is your life, your journey and if you desire to transform yourself, it is a personal decision. Therefore, it is your responsibility. That is why it is called personal growth. Even though others can help you, you hold yourself accountable for how you decide to live your life.
The one concept of personal growth (development) however, is that it is for the benefit of others. You use your gifts to help others and to serve others. And in return, you also benefit by growth in all ramifications. It requires some inner-strength, self-discipline, and ofcourse that willingness to implement.
There’s never a peak. We’re forever moving forward. It is a life-long journey and we’re constantly on that path.
It is possible to create the change that will help you lead the life that you truly desire. All you need is to begin the journey and here are four useful steps to make that happen:
✅Introspection: Pause. Think about your life. Reflect inwardly. Who are you? Why are you here? What are you supposed to do here? What are the things that make you happy? Deep down within do you think you should be serving where you are now or somewhere else? Do you think you should do more? Do you think there are skills you need to develop? What do you aspire to be? (Remember not to conform to expectations). What do YOU want? What are your dreams? What kind of solutions can you provide? Know yourself! Commit to self-reflection to know and accept who you are, and then work from there.
✅Choose an area to work on: on the journey of personal growth, there may be more than one area where you need to work on. After self-reflecting, choose one area and begin to work on that, one after another. Do not go about it thinking you can change yourself all round at once. Trust me, you’ll backslide. Ask yourself…’Do I need to work on my patience‘? ‘Do I need more spiritual awareness? ‘Do I need to learn to communicate/relate better with others?’. ‘Do I need to love myself more or learn how to love others better?’ Pick a hustle. And then make that your top priority. Start reading books on that area, start practicing, start learning from others, start journaling.
✅Get better: You see, breaking out from poor habits isn’t easy at all. The power of habits is crazy. It kinda dictates one’s life if one doesn’t deliberately take charge of it. When you begin the journey of personal growth, the aim is to get better. To improve your strengths, to become a better version of who you are.
Learn new skills, try things differently, set new goals, push away from your comfort. Also, listen to audio CDs, perhaps attend seminars or conferences that’ll help your journey. Keep getting better. Keep growing.
✅Volunteer/Share: Along your journey, you’re going to learn a lot. You’re going to know more. Now, don’t keep it to yourself. Volunteer. Share what you know. In doing so, you will be improving as well as be giving back! Like I said, the concept is in relation to others. To serve others, to help others, while you benefit as well. As you continue to volunteer/share, you will never shrink in knowledge. The more you teach others, the more you learn, the more you grow.
There are specific kinds of people who need what you have to offer. You might not meet everyone’s need, but surely you will meet the needs of those whom you’re meant to help.
“Every success story is a tale of constant adaption, revision, and change”. ~ Richard Branson.
Making that decision to personal growth is very easy. The hard part is committing to the daily habits of improvement. We as humans are creatures of habit. But it is not impossible. I can, you can, we all can make that difference!
