In December 2005, a passenger aircraft with 110 persons onboard, traveling from Abuja to Port-Harcourt, Nigeria crash-landed in Port-Harcourt. That event is so memorable. One of the two survivors, badly burnt and almost unrecognizable was Kechi Okwuchi.
I watched her recently on Americas Got Talent (AGT) were she wowed the audience. Before she began, she explained to the audience how music had changed her life. While on her hospital bed fighting for her life, going through pains and series of surgeries, she turned to the only thing that keeps her happy. Singing! It helped her get through with her recovery phase and changed her life tremendously. Are you still wondering why she’s on AGT?
On another story, I got so curious one day and asked the owner of the hair salon where I usually go to get my hair done why she chose that vocation. Her reply…”I’ve always loved braiding people’s hair from childhood. My Barbie–dolls, even my mom, sisters and friends. (she’s so creative with it hence my question). According to her, she always enjoy hair-braiding. And it all started as a hobby.
She started her salon using a tree as a shade but owns a big hair salon today. Her hobby provided her a path to meet some people’s needs and also a earn a living.
A hobby is any activity done for pleasure or as a means of relaxation. It is something you do that you love and that makes you happy. It connects you to your inner self. If you become so passionate about it, it can drive your enthusiasm to pursue your interest and in doing so, it may change your life completely!
Ways your hobby can change your life completely!
1. It helps you find your purpose:
One of the ways to find your purpose is to find the things you love to do and are passionate about. Your purpose is what makes your life more meaningful. It is a worthy cause and the reason for your existence. Your passion provides you the motivation to find it. So pay attention to those activities you always enjoy doing, it could lead you right into your purpose. Just incase you’re still figuring where you could serve.
2. It helps you express your creativity.
Creativity is the act of turning your ideas into reality. Your hobby, whether it’s painting or drawing, wood-carving, soccer, knitting, whatever it is that you enjoy, (think about them) will help you express your art. As you pursue your interest, you would be able to express yourself more creatively. And as you continue to do so, you’d be nourishing your emotions, making yourself happy and also becoming more creative.
3. It helps you fight stress:
Usually, when you feel overwhelmed or worked up, Bored or even depressed, it is advised that you take a break and indulge in something you love to do. Yes. Hobbies are that therapeutic!!! It is a way of re-focusing your energy to something less overwhelming and relieving you of some anxiety. This helps your sanity and stability. Most people will turn to dancing or singing, or other forms of recreations which they enjoy as a means of de-stressing and de-cluttering their mind.
It improves your mood and helps you fight stress.

4. It is a great confidence booster:
Can I ask you a question? What are you good at? Knowing that you’re good at something boosts your confidence. (Atleast you know you’re not a total jerk. Haha!). This can be so mentally rewarding.
5. It can help you network and become more social:
If you’re anti-social or feel socially awkward, finding a hobby and indulging in it can help you become more social. You’d be able to meet new friends from all around and connect with other people who share same interest as you. By engaging in a positive activity with others, you’d be building relationships and even learning new skills. How so sweet. You’d agree with me that hobbies are totally life-changing.
A hobby can add a spark to brighten your day and also improve your health both physically and mentally. It lives you feeling much more better.

I love hiking. I get to explore new places, being in the woods, and meet new people.I also love volunteering. You get to help people and do what you love at the same time. Some things that I volunteer for: playing with the babies at church on Sunday mornings, help retouch paintings to be sent to hospital all over the world and volunteer at the center for puppetry arts. Yup, having hobbies are what life is all about. You get to do life with others.

I absolutely agree. God put those things naturally there for you to use it and explore but some people just get blind and still climb to the mountain, bathe in rivers etc ‘in search of purpose’. Your hobby/gifts are just there inside you, staring at you and doing you ‘yimu’ when you stay confused.lol

Great post! Hmm…. honestly one of my biggest hobbies is writing. Now when it comes to what am I writing, it is poetry or song-writing I love the most. However, I have not just been able to see a practical future in it so I took to blogging instead. It’s been working for me so far. – http://www.jamilakyari.com

That’s great Jamila, I love writing too. Books instead for me and blogging is a mini-way for me to do that even though I’ve actually authored one on print and e-format. Any hobby one is passionate about, with great zeal, it can be totally life-changing.

This is such a great post ! Being active is definitely the best way to fight stress and a negative mind. I used to have a lot of hobbies. Horseback riding, stand up paddling, golf but then came a little daughter… 🙂 I still try to stay active though and go to the gym three times a week. Signed up with a trainer so i force myself to go. It feels great!

I do feel the best times in my weeks/end is when I can enjoy my hobby.I`m creative and enjoy different things from art line dancing, cycling you name it.
Having said that, my best hobby, the one that really satisfies me is gardening, knowing the salad on my plate came from my garden is something of joy and pride.

Baking always calms me and allows me to destress so I began documenting my creations and may eventually publish. Probably need to find an active hobby too since I love testing it almost more than making it.
