An apple a day…

I’ve always heard the saying ” an apple a day keeps the doctor away” and often wondered how eating a single apple would keep the doctor away & yet there were so many sick people in the world.

People often ignore nutritional advice & would eat whatever their body crave for. Honestly I belong to this category. I mean, who’ll start measuring the number of calories or quantity of meal before they eat? Or maintain a strict diet of what to eat & what not.

But as we grow, we begin to understand that our body needs less of some kind of foods & more of some other kind, we begin to learn not to surpass a certain calorie a day, not to eat heavy once it’s past some certain time of the day, and to be more conscious of what goes into our mouth. We may not always get it  100%, but we would continue to work at it.

For the sake of this post, I’m going to focus on our subject–Apple.

I often see hawkers at the traffic waving this at me but would put up a mean face & make sure the glasses are wound up & doors properly locked. At the market / supermarket, I often see it displayed & would sometimes reluctantly buy, sometimes not. It’s not like my favorite fruit so even if it’s in the fruit bowl at home, I don’t bother.

However, I now have a better understanding of some of the health benefits of this fruit and would gladly share it with us.

Apples are extremely rich in important anti-oxidants which may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes & heart disease.

They are low in calories & contain no saturated fats or cholesterol which is great in maintaining fitness. This fruit is also rich in dietary fiber.

The apple fruit also contains good quantities of vitamin C, consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body fight/ develop resistance to infectious diseases.

It is also a good source of B-complex vitamins which help in metabolism.

They carry a small amount of minerals like calcium & potassium which helps in controlling heart rate & blood pressure.

This delicious fruit is essential for overall wellness thereby justifying the adage…”an apple a day keeps the doctor away”.

So next time you need a snack, reach for the fruit bowl or refrigerator & have yourself an apple.

Today, keep calm…& eat an apple.
